Our line of Nontoxic Yoga Mats is SGS tested and constructed from PVC foam, without the use of toxic plasticizers or phthalates. Other mats of similar material construction have been called PER mats, Non-P mats, and Clean PVC mats. Standard PVC mats may have a bit more stickiness than the Nontoxic mat, but we believe this is more than outweighed by the potential negative impact of phthalates and heavy metals used in manufacturing. ALL PVC mats can have a strong odor upon first opening and unrolling. In the case of our Nontoxic mats it is due to the mats being shrink wrapped immediately after production and some gasses being trapped. Any other mats of the same type can experience this minor issue, one easily addressed by letting the unrolled mat air out. Our mats are manufactured in Taiwan, the country where this type of mat was invented and where the highest quality factories for producing them are located. Premium, eco-friendly, and affordably priced products--that's what YogaRat's all about! Pair your new mat with one of our awesome Yoga Towels! I had 3 requirements for the next yoga mat I would be purchasing:

1) Extra-thick (my knees need it)

2) Red in color

3) Printed design to my liking

When I finally saw this on Amazon, I was really ecstatic! It had been almost impossible to find a mat that encompassed all three qualities.

However, when I got the mat, I noticed that the flower print doesn't quite reach the edge and cuts off right before. Also, the print itself doesn't seem to have quite the caliber of let's say, a Gaiam mat - the lines of the flowers aren't very crisp. The color is some dirty white - not very bright at all. The worst part is that the alignment of the lines on the mat are ever-so-slightly crooked! It was noticeable when I was doing yoga for the first time and had made extra sure to place my mat even with the lines of the hardwood floor at the studio...yet I felt unbalanced and thought I was going crazy until I noticed the poor cut on the mat!

Of course, now that I'm reviewing this product, I've actually taken the time to zoom in to the picture posted on Amazon, and I DO see that all the poor qualities mentioned above are subtly presented in the photo, so maybe I should have paid more attention before...or maybe I just know what to look for now.

As far as the smell goes, I thought the mat smelled incredibly bad and toxic-ish when I unwrapped it, so I was a little confused that the company had touted its non-toxic and non-smell-at-unwrapping qualities. I've bought cheaper mats before that I don't recall smelling at all. Of course, the mat is fine now.

The first couple times I used the mat, I was slipping on it so hard. I never fell out of a downward dog stance, but that took a lot of strength and repositioning. It's getting less slippery with every use, so that may not be a problem in the future. Just beware the first few times. Also, the mat isn't sticky on the other side of the flowers. Maybe some people like this feature, but I prefer my mat to stick to the floor when I'm doing yoga - I like the assurance that my mat won't shift underneath me when I'm doing complicated poses and I also like my mats to stay rolled shut when I'm not using them.

For the price it's cheap and effectual and who can complain about free shipping? Plus, the mat is cheaper on Amazon than the company's official website. From far away, no one would be any wiser to the aesthetic problems. I do like that I can easily and immediately identify which mat is mine and I very VERY much appreciate how cushioned it is. I have not had to roll the edges of my mat to protect my knees. I do have to say, the mat is growing on me with each use (5 so far).

However, when I choose to replace this or buy another mat for my yoga partner, I will definitely invest in higher quality, more pricey mat - probably $50 and above....

Some yoga mats (most) have a terrible off-gassing that seems to never cease! NOT THESE lovely numbers. No off-gassing at all. I love this mat. This particular color is very calming and has a lovely print. Some days I turn it over and have no print (just for variety). It is soft & squishy enough to be comfortable and also nice for standing poses....(not too mushy). No slipping in downward dog or any other pose. I highly recommend this. I'm soo glad for all the other reviews on Amazon that I poured over for hours before finally finding YogaRat. Nice job, YogaRat. I bought my sister-in-law the thicker one for her birthday and she loves it, too!...

I wanted to use the mat for a while before reviewing it. I've been practicing yoga about 5 times a week, for the past 6 months. This mat has exceded expectations and has held up nicely to pretty consistent use. I'm giving it 4 stars based on the details bellow. Overall I'd recommend this mat if you, like me, are new to yoga, want a non toxic mat and are on a budget.

+ 1 start: Material/thickness. It took me a while to find an affordable mat that was latex and plasticizers free. I have sensitive skin so that was very important. I've yet to have one rash, not even in my face after laying face down (sweaty) on the mat. Also this non toxic foam is thick but It doesn't add an extra layer of resistance. Meaning it provides lots of cushion for your knees, but is not too mushy when standing in balancing poses so it doesn't make you wabble. I've used this mat for practice in the studio (hardwood floors) and in the park (grass and dirt "floors") and its always cushiony and stable.

+ 1 star: Style. The design (mosaic- charcoal) is lovely. Its a quality print that covers the whole thing and has yet to peel off/flake/bubble up from anywhere in the mat, corners included. Its a pretty unique design too. I go to a high attendance studio and have yet to see anyone with my mat. I love the fact that in a crowded room I can easily recognize my mat. I've also received a few complements on it and "where did you get that mat?" type inquiries. The color is a soothing shade of grey, which is great when you are in a room full of stridently bright green, pink and orange mats... for me is nice to stare at ...
