One of Natural Fitness's founding principles is to tread lightly on the earth. They aim to offset the environmental impact that results from the manufacturing and distribution of their products. To achieve this, the company created their Zero Impact Program (ZIP). While Natural Fitness is always looking for new and creative ways to offset their eco-footprint, here’s is what the company is currently doing:

Plant-A-Tree Initiative: For every product sold, Natural Fitness will fund the planting of a tree, which can remove up to 2,000 pounds of pollution from the atmosphere. Through various partner organizations, the company hopes to improve the lives of people around the world by implementing sustainable land-use programs utilizing the trees provided. Locations for planting trees vary; but past projects have been conducted throughout Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Each location and project is researched and developed to implement the most effective plan possible; one that is best for the people and eco-system involved. Offsetting the eco-footprint of their employees and offices. Offering the most products available. Use a "green" web host company that utilizes solar panels to power its data center and office. Partnering with like-minded companies to raise public awareness about the environmental problems created through use of fossil fuels and other non-sustainable practices. Using recycled content paper in business cards, letterhead, envelopes, labels, checks, and printer/copier paper. All of the product packaging and inserts that Natural Fitness uses are made with recycled paper. Using recycled packaging materials and boxes in the company's warehouse. They also pack with old newspapers and other recyclable paper products. Helped create the Chicago Biodiesel Co-op, which educated, promotes, and produces locally-derived biofuels. Greening the company's comprehensive recycling program and using natural light when possible. Spearheaded an ambitious recycling program for the 500,000 square foot office building Natural Fitness occupies, along with 60 companies.

When compared to my standard sized PVC mat, this mat is noticeably different. Both sides have a slightly raised texture that's different from most other mats and both sides have a logo.

Since it's natural rubber, it actually feels a bit like a car tire. Not as hard, but a similar texture, and it really holds you in place. I don't slip at all on this mat during a yoga workout. However, it isn't as soft as a PVC mat. It's better than the floor, but there really isn't very much cushion if you're in a pose that makes your hips or heels dig into the ground.

Overall, I really like it because it makes me feel secure knowing that my feet aren't going to slip out from under me, but I do wish it were a little more springy....

I bought this to replace my tattered old mat. I should have looked at all of the reviews before buying, though. First off, it's a gorgeous mat. It's dense and stable on the floor in class. I like the smell of it -- it just smells like rubber to me. Then I started class. . . I sweat quite a bit doing yoga, and the moment the mat started getting wet I lost most grip. I even grabbed the sides of the mat to try to stay stable. When dry the thing is wonderfully stable, but once it's wet you'll tense up trying not to splay apart doing any poses that require traction. I've tried using a yogi toes towel on top, and I've tried both sides, with and without the towel. So far, the best I can do is put the towel on the stickier side and keep the towel as dry as possible. Then, towards the end of a typical class, I'll start losing my grip as moisture seeps through the towel to the mat itself. So my advice is buy something else if you think you're going to get the mat wet at all. As for me, when I have the money, I'll be buying something else. For now, I regret my purchase and will have to live with it....

I like this mat and have had a great experience with it in my Yoga class. It sticks like glue to the wood floor and my hands don't slip (I should mention, I sweat pretty good). The only reason I gave this mat a 4 and not a 5 is twofold: 1) the smell is really strong and 2) the colors that are shown online are NOTHING like what you will get.

I have had my mat for a week and it has spent three days outside, it still has an odor which I'm really hoping will fade with time. I was VERY disappointed in the color. It states "earth/red rock" which looks like a faded red and brown on the website. I would describe the color as more of faded, peachy-orange and dark brown. I personally don't care for it, but others have commented on how much they like it.

Overall, this mat is definitely worth the price....
