Hugger Mugger Eco Yoga Kit

Jute is a natural rain-fed fiber that typically grows without the need for pesticides and fertilizers

Jute combines breathability with high tensile strength

The mat features a non-slip backing of PER, a material that contains no formaldehyde or heavy metals

3.5 inches wide and extremely durable, stable and solid

The mat is static free and resistant to mildew.

This yoga kit has all the essentials - a mat, a strap, and a block. The jute mat has a non-slip PER backing that contains no formaldehyde or heavy metals. The eight-foot strap is made from hemp, a fast-growing plant that quickly replenishes itself, and features an easy-to-thread D-ring buckle. And the block is made of cork, a natural material that is harvested within a highly regulated industry to ensure survival of the source resource. A cork oak tree is allowed to grow for 25 years undisturbed before its bark is harvested and then another seven to nine years while its bark regrows.

What I love most about it is that it does not have the chemical smell I had to contend with when I used mats in gyms and my own mats. How could I be thinking "zen" and be inhaling those awful rubbery smells I had to until now?...

I have mixed reviews about this product. First of all, as a whole, the set is real nice. For the price, I don't think anything else is better. The cork block is larger than I expected and, because of it's size, more useable than I expected it to be. The cork does have a funky, mold smell to it, although I'm not sure whether that's a natural feature or a storage issue. I think it will probably air out in time and I don't think it will prevent me from using it. The mat is just okay-- honestly, it's probably as good as you're gonna get without 2 separate mats. The hemp strap is super thick, long, and sturdy. I see that as generally a good thing, although it's too large to secure the mat or be lugged around, so it would probably prove useless to someone who lugs their mat to yoga classes. (I do mine at home).

The jute mat is really what I bought this set for and, as I said, it's okay. It has a nice, neutral color, green tag, and a slight earthy jute smell, which I absolutely adore. However, I was hoping for a thin jute rug on top, with a non-skid coating on the bottom-- but this is basically a thin jute potato sack melted into a super thin yoga mat. Nothing to get too excited about. Aesthetically, it looks a little nicer than my old cheapie, but the one I received does NOT look like a jute rug (as other people have said). Perhaps this is a quality control issue, but there's not enough jute actually on top of the yoga mat's surface to improve traction to any significant degree-- I still have to wear my leather gloves in down dog, and I really don't sweat that much.

Overall, this is a good set and mat, particularly for the price; but it's nothing to get TOO excited about. If, like me, you really want a natural surface to lay on, I would probably just suck it up and use two different mats. That's what I'll probably end up doing....
