I spent some time looking up different brands before deciding on Gaiam, as I heard pretty good things about it. Not suprisingly (if you read the title of my review anyways) I found it a bit less than expected. I got it in the mail today and was very excited to use it for yoga. Perhaps unlike some delicate flowers that practice yoga I do sweat occasionally and my hands and feet kept slipping out from under me! That can be a bit precarious when your doing yoga and your face is close to a hard wooden floor. Now this is the first yoga mat I've owned; I have always used the yoga mats the gym provides and never had an issue with slipping. So this yoga mat either:

A) is slippery [and will never get better]

B) has some substance on it leftover from manufacturing that makes it slippery (**Note** This mat has an EXTREMELY strong chemical smell that you should probably let air out for a day before using.) [going to try and rinse it off]

C) may need to be broken in? [that sure takes time..]

Don't get me wrong, this mat isn't as terrible as using a gym mat for yoga (THAT is slippery!) but it's definately not great (especially for the price)....

Similar to another review, I find this mat to be very slippery. I've only used it a couple of times at this point, and I hoping that it gets better. But at this point it is really problematic as I start slipping as soon as I begin sweating.

Yoga mats have basically 2 purposes... to provide cushion and to provide traction. This misses the boat on 1 of it's 2 purposes. I wouldn't recommend this mat.

I love the color and the pattern of this mat.

The problem is it really smells. Before my first use, I put it in a small room with an open window for three days. The smell gets weaker. Then it was good to use.

I actually bought this mat because I really liked the way it looked.

It turned out to be a great mat too.

It felt great on the floor.

I didn't slip so I am glad I purchased this initially based on looks.

I bought these for my girlfriend. She enjoys the great color choices and appearance of these mats. They function pretty well and are comfortable because they seem to be a little bit thicker than standard mats.

However the reason they are only getting 3 out of 5 stars is the smell. As soon as you open the box you are overcome with a strong chemical smell. It took my girlfriend washing them down with an alcohol/water mixture and then airing them outside for 2 days before they were bearable. They still have a faint smell but are usable now.

Overall they are good functioning and usable yoga mats, but don't expect to use the right out of the box unless you like that chemical smell!...

OMG this is the best mat I have ever used!

Firstly, I got it in a timely manner and it arrived well packaged. There was a slight smell when I unwrapped it, I will admit. But, this can be expected with most mats so no biggie there. I wiped it down with slightly soapy hot water (laundry detergent), rinsed with cool water, and let it hang dry on the shower rod for 24 hrs.

I have tried MANY different mats so while I am certainly not an authority, when I tell you that the thing worked like magic from the first use, I mean it. I even brought my rosin (Aurorae brand) just in case, but I did not slip ONCE. Not even when I started to perspire. I cannot say how it would work in hot yoga because I am not a hugely sweating type person, but for hatha syle I have no complaints. I was able to get deeper into poses than I ever have.

Oh, and it's pretty. I got the sunset one.

Namaste,

Stephanie...
