I received this as a Christmas present from my mother and was excited at first. I liked the idea of having multiple grips, but I find that the increased grip possibilities come at the sacrifice of stability. I'm an intermediate yoga practitioner and use blocks primarily for some of the trickier balance poses where I really want to open up. The give in this block's construction introduces a different type of wobble that I don't particularly care for.
This might be good for the absolute beginner, but for me it just doesn't provide the level of stability I'm looking for....

These are extremely helpful in doing various yoga positions that may be hard to achieve for the beginner, but also for those finding it a challenge to keep your balance. When just beginning to stretch your muscles it is often hard or simply not possible to rest a hand on the mat in order to balance, this will aid those with that need. As time goes on you will likely incorporate these blocks into various poses as part of your practice. They are sturdy and the center hole does make it easier to grip....
