Buying a yoga mat is like...well, let's just say it's a very personal decision and it's based on the way you practice yoga. Many people REALLY like cushion when they practice- if so they will really appreciate a Manduka or some other thick mat. Other people really like to feel the stability of the floor in their poses especially when doing standing poses or balance poses such as arm balances. These people would really like a mat like Prana's Revolution. It feels very firm and very stable allowing you to create a very firm foundation for yourself in all poses. Some poses do require added cushion, for this I recommend a yoga type blanket (wool blanket like from Hugger Mugger or a woven Mexican type blanket) which is the most versatile of all yoga props and serious yogis do use them often.

The dimensions of the Revolution mat are very nice- the extra inches all around are just great for the average person and essential for the person who is larger than average. The taller folks out there practicing on a standard size mat actually pull their arms in to accommodate their narrow mat width which which can have a negative effect on shoulder alignment. The extra length is great especially for folks with longer legs.

The mat is really durable. It has some patina to it for sure especially where my feet hit it at the ends so it definitely bears the badge of daily use. I can see though where I will get many more years of use out of this mat- is it a lifetime mat? It seems possible, with proper care and keeping.

Caveats to "Revolution" ownership- 1) It's heavy, like 8 lbs or something. I still travel with mine everywhere. I fold it into my suitcase (no, folding doesn't ever leave creases) or carry it in a mat bag onto the plane. I love my mat. I'm willing to do this. 2) It's BIG. It won't fit WELL in standard mat straps (they are too narrow) or standard mat bags (too short/opening often not big enough). You have to buy the carrying devices especially made for this mat. If you go to crowded yoga classes or crowded yoga workshops the extra space this mat provides allows you to feel some needed breathing room. I feel like I've "staked my claim" in a way with this mat at these events. 3) Some people complain that this mat is slippery- not mine, ever. Some of the ones last year, yes, they felt slippery to some folks I know. The more recent ones were not slippery. I've heard the same complaints about other mat brands it's really just par for the course in a new mat .You have to break them in, sorry. You have to wash them with water and scrub with an old washcloth when you get them- don't use any "cleansers" or mat spray on them which are slippery. If water and elbow grease doesn't fix it then rub lightly with fine sand paper just to get off the whatever factory coating they started putting on it. 4) Chemical smell. Yes, there was one initially, it went away after I washed it and let it air out for a day. I am chemically sensitive and this issue resolved itself and has left me with no problems whatsoever. 5) Strings on the side. There are some cotton strings (I suppose for reinforcement of the rubber material) that hang out the long sides of the mat (we're talking about 2.5 to 3 inch long strings very thin maybe ten or so per side). I have trimmed them off several times but eventually more work their way out. Doesn't bother ME. Some may be bothered about this detail, if so they would just continue to trim as needed. 6) The fabric tag that is sewn onto the mat (as another reviewer noted) does say "made in harmony with Anusara". (it says that because the mat was designed by the founder of Anusara yoga, John Friend.) I think the tag is really pretty (there's a nice Fibonacci spiral on mine) and it's distinctive and you have to get REALLY close to read it (inches close) because the words are pretty small. The tag which is about 3"x4" (I haven't actually measured but I'm sure it's smaller than an index card) does not get in my way and you can put it toward the back so it doesn't alter your "sun salute jive". You could also flip the mat over and practice on the side without the tag if it really bothers you, both sides are the same material. 7) People will notice and comment on your mat and it's big-ness etc. They will want to try the mat out and ask you about it. It has been a bit of a conversation piece. 8) Price. When the mat first came out it was almost $100 bucks, today it's down to $56. Wow, bargain.

Bottom line: if you are serious about your practice AND you want more stability and space on your mat and you want the subsequent feeling of freedom that more space and greater stability can provide your practice, then I wish you Congrats. You have arrived.

I get that whatever mats I use will be branded by the company I buy them from, however when I received this item in the mail it has a LARGE (3x5ish) non-removable patch that states: "created in harmony with Anusara". I love my manduka, but I purchased this to introduce my private sessions to a wider array of mat options - so they could see what works best for them. I love anusara - as well as a dozen other styles. They all of their place! However I was aghast that this major detail was left out of the description. I did a short practice and the mat performed well, with the exception that the patch which is located well within regularly used area of the mat is fabric and slippery - it required repositioning and awareness during practice to avoid it. I'd rather have a mat that supports my internal awareness rather than distracts from it....

I loved everything about this mat until I actually used it for yoga. Even a little mouisture(sweat) makes it slippery. I was slowly spreading out in all standing poses. I think I can still use it for somatics....
