After reading the review regarding sensitivities and the Jade yoga mat I wanted to add some thoughts. I am a yoga instructor and teach about 10 classes per week I love my 3 year old Jade yoga mat. It does smell different at first. One thing I have done to get rid of the smell is to wash my mat in the washer and hang it over a line to dry. These mats seem almost indestructible and if I ever need another one I will purchase the earth-friendly Jade. You can leave it in the car in the hot Florida summer which you cannot do with the cheaper sticky mats which turn gummy....

I have been practicing ashtanga and vinyasa yoga for 3 years, in both heated and nonheated environments, about 3-5 times a week. In that time I have used 2 different Jade yoga mats, but the first one I bought is now 3 years old and still usable.

Here are some simple recommendations for getting the most life out of your mat. With my first mat, I found that I was always standing on the same side and in the same place, and eventually (after a year) that created a bit of deterioration at the back of the mat where my feet set up in downward dog. With my second mat, I regularly change which end I stand on, and flip it over to use the other side. Both sides of the mat are equally tacky, and by doing this, my second mat is now 2 years old and in still in perfect shape. Also, I regularly washed my first mat in the washing machine, but I think I did it too frequently. With my second mat, I use a tea tree disinfectant after each use, and take it home from the studio to wash about once every 2 months. That routine has kept my mat clean and free of nasties. I have no problems with traction even in 100F rooms.

If you are thinking about buying a Jade yoga mat, just do it! They are seriously awesome (and "the smell" really does go away in short time compared to the life of the mat.)...

I have multiple chemical sensitivities and am not able to tolerate perfumes, smoke or chemicals. I was in a yoga class next to someone using this mat recently and had to leave early because the fumes it was giving off gave me a headache and were making me cough whenever we did poses on the floor. I asked if the mat was brand new, and she said she'd had it for a couple of months (!). This mat is out-gassing a ton of fumes. I do not recommend it for sensitives, or for people who care about the health and well-being of those with MCS and sensitive people they know....
