I am a marathon runner and have been suffering from patellofemoral pain (knee pain) for the last year. My chiropractor told me that icing my knees was the most important treatment for this pain. These knee wraps (I bought one for each knee) are very handy. I keep them in my car and since it's winter now in Michigan, they stay cold for a long time in there. I may need a cooler for the warmer months. I can drive while wearing them, which means I can ice my knees on my way home, as opposed to when I get home! It makes all the difference with my pain. I am petite (5'4, 105 lbs) and I can wrap these tight. I do wish the ice packs were a little larger, but they do the trick! For someone who needs to ice an area larger then the knee cap and surrounding area, you may want a larger ice pack to place inside... there is room for a larger pack to fit in the pocket that holds it.
As for heat, I have not tried it yet... but these are good quality, non toxic packs, so I am sure they will do the trick (directions say to microwave on a defrost setting to heat them up.)
I have also used these to wrap my ankle, and it worked! I was able to wrap it around like a bootie!...
